Advanced Unit Chaplain and Chaplain Aide Training

Councils may now provide Unit Chaplain and Unit Chaplain Aide training which includes participation by the Chartered Organization Representative at their convenience. This easy to download syllabus is intended to reinforce not only the relationship with the Chartered Partner but connect these Scouts and Scouters with other units in their districts and council. They may learn best practices to strengthen their roles as Chaplains and Chaplain Aides, inspire more Duty to God activities and foster understanding of the many faiths represented in the Boy Scouts of America.

Outdoor Skills Training Courses

These courses are designed to help Scouters with skills related to the BSA’s outdoor program.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

This one-and-a-half day course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. BALOO training consists of an online pre-requisite component in addition to an overnight hands on practical. BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry our a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack overnighter.

Numbers are classified according to type. The first type of number is the first type you ever learned about: the counting, or "natural" numbers:

The next type is the "whole" numbers, which are the natural numbers together with zero:

Then come the "integers", which are zero, the natural numbers, and the negatives of the naturals:

The next type of number is the "rational", or fractional, numbers, which are technically regarded as ratios (divisions) of integers. In other words, a fraction is formed by dividing one integer by another integer.

Note that each new type of number contains the previous type within it. The wholes are just the naturals with zero thrown in. The integers are just the wholes with the negatives thrown in. And the fractions are just the integers with all their divisions thrown in. (Remember that you can turn any integer into a fraction by putting it over the number 1 . The Cellarius Universe (CX) is an original, transmedia cyberpunk franchise that leverages blockchain technology and user-generated assets to create a collaborative, fan-curated story.

Our narrative begins in the near future and will expand through the galaxy in both space and time. Written works, art, and other media will explore the relationship between humans, sentient artificial superintelligence, and the full spectrum in between. In essence, the Cellarius Universe is a future-oriented mythology. It is also a collective storytelling project whose content and contours will be shaped by its community.

The community is the lifeblood of the CX project. In the decentralization movement, power and opportunity is “pushed from the center to the edge.” What this enables is for every participant in the network to play a necessary and meaningful role. We believe the depth of engagement and strong personal rewards for participation will make CX an exciting place to be. This is evident as you read our goals for the platform.

As we emerge from “stealth-mode,” we hope that many of you are eager to get involved. Your first step should be to go on our website —  cellarius.network  — and download the three foundational documents: Universe Guide, White Paper, and Community Guidelines. These speak to the CX story architecture, the framing for the platform, and the rules of engagement, respectively. Please read these to better acquaint yourself with the project. A lot of love went into developing these documents!

Motivation

We are inspired by the decentralized movement currently being spearheaded by blockchain technology. Never before has the future looked so bright! With Web 3.0 technology, we are on the cusp of a beautiful transformation of our socio-economic fabric, which will usher in amazing opportunities. The introduction to our Community Guidelines neatly summarizes our motivations:

So…I thought this was a “blockchain project?”

The CX project is a ConsenSys Formation. ConsenSys is the world’s largest blockchain development studio and focuses on building revolutionary decentralized applications for the Ethereum blockchain. The invention of the blockchain has introduced a paradigm shift in technology, one which we are calling Web 3.0! We are still in the very early days of adoption and development. However, despite open access to everyone, the adoption is not equally distributed. The CX platform is an attempt to bring the benefits of the blockchain to creative content creators all around the world. In our White Paper we use an analogy to help make this point:

But how can a trans-media franchise use a blockchain?

The Cellarius Universe makes use of the Ethereum blockchain to do several things. Primarly, the blockchain provides a mechanism for decentralized governance used in content curation and voting. Members of the community will be given the power to decide what content is highlighted and eventually adopted as part of the canonical story. We call this the Cellarius Core Canon submission process. You can read more about how this works in our White Paper which is available on our website.

Additionally, we plan on using the blockchain to create digital collectibles in the form of tokens. When a piece of content has been voted into the “core canon,” we will give the content creator the opportunity to issue tokens as a digital representation. The way to think about these tokens is like a digital baseball card or a CryptoKitty. But unlike those well known examples, CX canon will provide an unprecedented level of engagement and depth to the content. We anticipate that token owners will be active participants in building out additional story content related to their token holdings. The opportunities that are possible with collectible tokens are nearly endless and we look forward to the creative ways in which content creators will use these to interact with their fans. Just to give a few examples: special access to art galleries/book signings, virtual assets in a video game/VR experience, whitelist for an insider club, exclusive communications, patron opportunities, real-life merchandise, and the list goes on and on. We plan on offering these tokens as part of a CX digital marketplace.

We hope you are as excited as we are about the potential of the CX platform! But many of you may be feeling a bit like Ryan Selkis as he posted on twitter:

We understand that these concepts are new and push the limits of how the blockchain can be used. Blockchain technology is changing the fabric of commerce and we take it a step farther to the very foundation of our culture. We plan on helping spread the vision through educational outreach across various media. In fact, Christian Gossett taught a storytelling workshop at the ETHDenver Hackathon, and we plan to have many more such events both in person and online. YES, WE DO! You’ve been taught to simply consume content from your favorite franchises. This is a chance to change the paradigm. We want you to join us in building the Cellarius Universe together. Everyone has something to contribute! Bring all of your experience and talents and share them with us. One of my favorite examples I recently heard was someone who offered to share a recipe for a home brew which they thought would fit the “Rattler” faction described in the Universe Guide.

In addition to content creation, we need patrons, blockchain developers, community organizers, cosplayers, game designers, podcasters, bloggers, web app developers, YouTubers, translators, fashion designers, and many more. Whatever your skills, come share them with us and watch as the universe comes alive with the depth of human (and AI) experiences. Starbucks will eliminate plastic straws from its stores worldwide by 2020 to reduce environmental plastic pollution, the company says.

The coffee retailer will phase out single-use straws from its more than 28,000 locations, cutting out an estimated 1bn straws each year.

Customers will instead be given plastic lids designed for use without a straw or with non-plastic straws.

The use of plastic lids has been criticised by some consumers.

The decision was motivated by requests from partners and customers, said Colleen Chapman, vice-president of Starbucks' global social impact in a statement.

"Not using a straw is the best thing we can do for the environment."

Starbucks' announcement included statements of support from organisations such as the Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas programme and the World Wildlife Fund, praising the company for its straw ban.

Nicholas Mallos, of the Ocean Conservancy, said the ban was "a shining example of the important role that companies can play in stemming the tide of ocean plastic".

The announcement comes just one week after Seattle, Washington - home to Starbucks' headquarters - became the first major US city to ban single-use plastic straws and cutlery in bars and restaurants.

Starbucks' pushback against plastic has drawn a mixed reaction.

M Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International, issued a statement saying that 500m plastic straws are thrown away every day in the US and lauded Starbucks for its "meaningful action to protect our oceans".

But many consumers have criticised use of a plastic sipping lid as the replacement for straws.

"*Gets rid of plastic straw *Replaced with large plastic sipping lid," wrote one Twitter user.

Others voiced concern for those who rely on straws due to disability.

"What about disabled people who rely on straws? I often can't drink or eat without them," a customer tweeted.

Starbucks has been quick to defend its decision on Twitter.

Unlike cups or lids, recycling straws just isn’t possible because of their weight and size, despite the very best intentions.
